Neutral density filters allow all wavelengths to pass through equally. The effect of a neutral density filter is to reduce the overall brightness of an image. Neutral density filters are useful for splitting binary systems and reducing glare. The ND96-0.9 neutral density filter allows 13% of visible light to be passed through the filter and works best on large telescopes. The ND96-0.6 neutral density filter allows 25% of visible light to be passed through the filter. The ND96-0.3 neutral density filter allows 50% of visible light to be passed through the filter.
Moon - Excellent for reducing irradiation, glare and subject brightness. Colors are unaltered, as light is transmitted uniformly over the entire spectrum. Each model performs somewhat differently, depending on the brightness of the moon.
Planets - Stacking in combination with color filters lowers transmission, but retains true color balance for specific applications. Reduces glare on brighter planets and minimizes irradiation.
Binary Stars - Helpful in splitting binary stars, because it reduces glare and diffraction effects around the brighter star of the binary pair.
